About Tracy Owens, MPH, RD, CSSD, LDN

  • --Masters of Public Health  in Nutrition (MPH) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
  • --Undergraduate in nutrition from East Carolina University.

  • --Registered Dietitian (RD)  through the American Dietetic Association

  • --Licensed Dietitian/ Nutritionist  (LDN) in the State of North Carolina.

  • --Tracy's interest in nutrition began when she was a nursing major struggling with the extra weight she had gained as a freshman.  That coupled with a required nutrition course for her nursing degree, sparked an enthusiasm for the field of nutrition that continues today

  • --in 2007, Tracy met the specialty requirements and passed a Board Certification test to become a Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD).

  • --There are currently only 300 Board Certified Sports Dietitians in the United States.


  • --The United States Olympic Committee hired  dietitians with the credentials CSSD to work with Olympic athletes. 

Past experience
--Tracy has 24 years of group and individual counseling and teaching experience.
-- During her 9 years with Rex HealthCare as a clinical dietitian in the Wellness Center, she developed numerous programs.  Program implementation  included a comprehensive weight loss program, lectures on cancer, sports nutrition and heart health.   She also developed focused counseling  for weight loss, heart  health, hypertension, diabetes and gastrointestinal disorders. 
--Tracy's dietitian experience also includes working  in private practice, at a substance abuse hospital,  home health nutrition, and at local athletic clubs. 

Personal Information
Tracy lives in the real world and can offer practical suggestions that help real people.  As a self proclaimed "middle of the road dietitian"  and non-gourmet cook, she can give  practical advice on how to improve homestyle cooking and for example, teach you how to make a healthier meatloaf and mashed potatoes that a family can enjoy.   Tracy grew up in a sports minded family and was active in many sports.  As the mother of 4 active children aged 13  to 22, sports have encompassed her household.

Sports Involvement
With her two sons and two daughters, Tracy has personally lived in the world of a variety of sports.  The different sports her children were/are involved with include: Challenge , Select and Eite soccer at Capital Area Soccer League (CASL),  AAU baseball, Legion baseball, and USTA tennis.  At the high school level, her kids involvement includes football, swimming, baseball and soccer.  At home and beyond, Tracy has provided nutrition information to athletes of all ages and sports, including  baseball, football, soccer, swimming, track,  tennis, golf, motocross, volleyball, and basketball, adn ballet. She has worked with high school, collegiate and professional athletes, as well as active adults who just  love to exercise and want to improve their game.  Personally, Tracy can be found on the tennis court playing USTA team tennis or working out at the gym.  Current favorites include Zumba and at home, doing P90X.

What is a Registered Dietitian
A registered dietitian has a minimum of a bachelors' degree, has completed a minimum of 1200 clinical hours in a supervised internship and passed a national  registration exam.  Registered dietitians use evidence-based practice that is supported by scientific journals, they understand the  anatomy and physiology of the body, its systems, disease states, drug-nutrient interactions and behavior modification.

In North Carolina, by law, the term "nutritionist" may only be used if someone has met the requirements set forth by the State of North Carolina and is Licensed by the State of North Carolina.
